Read about this technique on another forum about rust removal on parts. I tried Navel Jelly with poor results – just too heavily rusted and pitted. The process used Toilet bowl cleaner as a rust remover. Thought I would give it a try – so off I went to the store to get some cleaner.
This is the cleaner that I used

It has 20% hydrogen Chloride as its active ingredient. I Figure it’d be a Good Idea to wear gloves with this stuff. If it’ll take rust off metal – then I want to be protected. Now for the part

This came off an old 242C Colman lantern. Heavily pitted and Rusted. I have another so no biggy if this stuff doesn’t work.

Now the set up: rubber gloves, Plastic dish, toilet cleaner, and small wire brush

You’ll want to do this outside with PLENTY of ventilation – Mrs Starleen ran me out of the house the first time I used it! A quick dip in and working the small wire brush for about 30 seconds - Watch the rust just fall off.

Inspection

Finishing the part

Done!

Now a quick wash and dry – you’ll need to apply some kind of protectorate to prevent rusting. I’m going to paint this part with some high heat aluminum.

Prepping for paint. I sanded the part to get some of the pits out.

The Finale

Don’t ask me how this stuff works Thinking – it just does! I’m no chemist.

Hydrogen chloride forms corrosive hydrochloric acid on contact with water found in body tissue. Inhalation of the fumes can cause coughing, choking, inflammation of the nose, throat, and upper respiratory tract, and in severe cases, pulmonary edema, circulatory system failure, and death. Skin contact can cause redness, pain, and severe skin burns. Hydrogen chloride may cause severe burns to the eye and permanent eye damage.

RESPIRATOR AND GOGGLES!!!!

I use a product Super Rust Away, which is a powder mixed with water, takes a while longer, but much safer.

And here is why it does what it does

There are two chemical reactions taking place. First the Hydrochloric acid reacts with the rust coating the object

6 HCl (aq) + Fe2O3 (s) --> 2 FeCl3 (aq) + 3 H2O (l)

This exposes the gray Iron metal, which can then react rust making rust an a iron chloride soluble in water

Fe (s) + 2 HCl (aq) ---> FeCl2 (aq) + H2 (g)

It is the Hydrogen gas that is produced as bubbles

When there is no more iron oxide to react when the metal becomes grey and the reaction will stop. The Fe2O3 would be the limiting reagent.

I'm with ya (excellent, BTW), but how would this work on rust-stained concrete? Oxalic acid didn't even put a dent on my "oops" with the fetilizer a couple of years ago...the stains are still there Crying

I guess the real question is what compund is formed when Fe2O3 and 2Ca3SiO5 + 7H2O (from wiki) mix and what would the removal of said stain do to my grass if it were to come in contact with it?

Dang, I knew this was going to be a threadkiller... Laughing

Incorrect technique to be an actual red neck.

If you wad up a bunch of aluminum foil balls, fill a coke bottle halfway up with them, and fill it to the top of the aluminum with "the works", put the cap on and walk away...
Well, it makes a pretty good boom! Lots of fun when your redneck friends don't know it's coming. Twisted Evil

(seriously, good information. It's being filed away)

A VW forum reccomends oven cleaner or CLR. So who thought to try oven cleaner on a car?
